The Manchester Medical Society was formed in 1834 for the "cultivation and promotion of medicine and all related sciences". An aim continued today through a series of scientific meetings and symposia focused on CME/CPD/CPE and PGEA accredited training for medical professionals and for those working in professions allied to medicine.
The Society was founded in 1833 at a time when Manchester was expanding rapidly and faced many social problems. Few of the founders were statisticians in the modern sense. They were keen to improve conditions for ordinary people. The work of the Society was influential in bringing about social reform in the 19th century.
Today, the Society remains an influential forum where social and economic issues are discussed, free from party politics.
